Melbourne Archbishop Peter Comensoli has joined the chorus of religious figures paying tribute to Pell on social media this morning.
Pell led the Church of Melbourne from 1996 and 2001 with strong leadership and good governance before being transferred to Sydney and then to Rome, Comensoli added. Pell was the Vatican’s treasurer before he left in 2017 to stand trial in Australia for child abuse offences.The 81-year-old was convicted in 2018 of molesting two teenage choirboys in the sacristy at St Patrick’s Cathedral while he was Archbishop of Melbourne in 1996.
