Vatican correspondent Colm Flynn, who was among the first to report on the cardinal’s death, said Pell had died from a suspected cardiac arrest about 6.50am AEDT.
Flynn, who is in the US, told Melbourne radio station 3AW he had interviewed Pell for about 15 minutes days ago about the death of the late Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.During the meeting, Flynn said Pell joked about “suffering in silence” before his surgery but appeared in good spirits as he spoke about Christmas and world affairs.
Flynn, who was due to return to Rome in two days, said Pell’s private secretary, Father Joseph Hamilton, had immediately confirmed the news. “When I called him, he knew exactly why I was calling, and as soon as he answered he said: ‘yes, it’s true, cardinal Pell has died’,” he said.Pell was photographed next to the body of the late Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI just over a week ago.
Benedict’s death on December 31 brought to an end a decade of the former and present pope living side-by-side in the Vatican and it was the first time in more than 200 years that a pontiff had led the service for his predecessor.
