Pioneer Insurance's 'Real to Reel: Gen Z Short Film Competition' Grand Finals witnessed the impressive creativity of young filmmakers tackling pressing issues like climate change and political corruption.

PIONEER Insurance recently hosted the 'Real to Reel: Gen Z Short Film Competition ' Grand Finals at Greenbelt Cinema 3, showcasing the creative talents of the younger generation. Jerry Surpia, a student from Leyte Normal University, emerged victorious with his film 'Ang Panawagan ni Googly,' a unique and compelling narrative that tackles the pressing issue of climate change. The film centers around 'Googly,' a used plastic milk tea container, highlighting the devastating impact of the country's waste problem on the environment. Pioneer Group head Lorenzo Chan Jr., one of the judges, commended the vision and creativity of the Gen Z filmmakers. He noted that climate change and political issues, particularly graft and corruption, were prominent concerns for young people today. Chan expressed optimism that these films would inspire both the next generation and viewers of all ages to work towards a better future. Award-winning actress and Fire and Ice Entertainment CEO Liza Diño, who led the esteemed judging panel, was particularly impressed by the younger generation's outspokenness on social issues. She remarked that the competition revealed the deep care these young individuals have for societal challenges and their desire to make a positive impact. The judging panel, which also included multi-awarded director Chris Martinez, Unitel Straight Shooters Media Inc. President and CEO Madonna Tarrayo, and Octopus & Whale founder Joey Tiempo, awarded second place to 'Calor' by Troy Bryan Fontanar from Visayas State University. This film features 'Quip,' a robot living underground in a climate-ravaged future, embarking on a journey to witness the Earth's remaining greenery. Third place went to 'Trapo' by Danreb Dela Cruz, Myro Andrada, and John Rhey Flores from Doña Montserrat Lopez Memorial High School, which delivers a sharp critique on traditional politics in the Philippines. The online favorite award was presented to 'Siya Na Walang Pangalan,' a film that explores mental health through the lens of Leah Oliquino, Clare Puno, Jexel Keane Alejo, Gera Escobar, and Bien Bisenio from the University of the Philippines Baguio.'Real to Reel' transcends the boundaries of a typical competition, serving as a platform for Pioneer Insurance's longstanding commitment to empowering young people to shape their future and make the most of every moment.
