Gatchalian to MTRCB: Strengthen self-regulation mechanisms; impossible to review all online streaming platforms
Senator Sherwin Gatchalian advised the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board to strengthen the self-regulation mechanisms of online streaming platforms instead of pushing to regulate their contents.Gatchalian gave the unsolicited advice on Saturday, September 5, as he said that it would be impossible for the MTRCB to review each of contents of video streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, I-flix and YouTube.
While he acknowledged the regulatory agency’s mandate and intent for pushing their proposal, Gatchalian said MTRCB should remember that “nasa bagong panahon na tayo ngayon .” “For example, sa YouTube lang, naku, hindi lang daang libo kundi milyon ‘yong mga nakalagay doon na movie, iba’t ibang palabas. Imposible naman na suriin isa-isa yon ng MTRCB ,” he added.Itong mga YouTube, Netflix, mga platform na ito, may self regulation ,” he said.
Senators Franklin Drilon and Grace Poe had earlier opposed what they described as “impractical” and “ridiculous” proposal of the MTRCB to regulate online streaming services.
