Senator Sherwin Gatchalian on Sunday insisted that a third party should be included in the upcoming probe into the Recto Bank incident to provide credibility to the investigation.
Gatchalian made the statement following Malacañang’s refusal to conduct a tri-party probe into the incident where a Chinese vessel allegedly rammed a Philippine fishing boat in Recto Bank, which is considered part of the country’s exclusive economic zone .
The senator further said that a tripartite investigation should have been initiated at the onset to avoid public confusion over the conflicting statements of government officials regarding the incident. The lawmaker further said it is imperative that justice is served for the Filipino fishermen who were left out to die in the sea after the boat ramming incident.
“Itong issue na ito ay pag-isipan natin in the context na pwedeng mangyari ito sa mga susunod na panahon pa, dahil ang daming mga barkong pumupunta dyan at galing pa sa iba’t-ibang bansa ,” Gatchalian said. Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson, on the other hand, said allowing a joint investigation into the boat ramming incident may be interpreted as the Philippines waiving its ownership of Recto Bank.
