The Ottawa Senators’ defenceman was given a pivotal role as the club kicked off the six-team rookie tournament taking place at the LECOM Harbourcenter in Buffalo Friday afternoon with a 5-2 win over the New Jersey Devils.The 21-year-old Kleven suited up for eight games with the Senators at the end of last season after signing out of the University of North Dakota and heading into main camp. He’s considered the one guy who could make a strong push to be on the opening night roster.
This might be Kleven’s first rookie tourney, but he was one of three players given an alternate ‘A’ by coach David Bell Friday while centre Zack Ostapchuk was named the club’s captain.“I have to get myself ready for the season and get my touches in,” Kleven said before the club left for Buffalo Thursday. “I just have to play my game to get ready for camp.
“Just getting here and knowing what to expect, I had a chance to watch the other guys and see what they do well,” Kleven said. “I’m trying to put that into my game and become a pro.
