General manager Pierre Dorion, coach D.J. Smith and the rest of the hockey operations staff have made several changes to the roster. Winger Alex DeBrincat was dispatched to the Detroit Red Wings in July in a deal that brought back third-line forward Dominik Kubalik. Captain Brady Tkachuk, who will play with either Norris or Stutzle, told Postmedia last week having Norris back is a key.
There aren’t a whole lot of jobs open in this camp. Decisions have to be made on the third-and-fourth lines. Centre Shane Pinto remains an unsigned restricted free agent, but at some point, he’ll agree to a new deal, and he’ll be an important piece for the regular season. Once the Senators sign Pinto, the club will have to get some money off the books because Ottawa has approximately $900,000 in cap space.
One of the best battles to watch will be in the third pairing. Look, veteran Travis Hamonic and Erik Brannstrom are pencilled in to start the season with Jacob Bernard-Docker push for time as well.
