Gabriela Party-list Rep. Arlene Brosas criticizes the Marcos administration's acquisition of a stake in the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), arguing that it fails to address fundamental power sector issues and raises concerns about transparency and public interest.

Gabriela Party-list Rep. Arlene Brosas has expressed serious doubts about the Marcos government's recent deal with the privately-owned National Grid Corporation of the Philippines ( NGCP ). Brosas, a member of the progressive Makabayan bloc, believes the administration's move to acquire stakes in NGCP through the Maharlika Investment Corporation (MIC) fails to address the core issues plaguing the Philippines' power sector .

She argues that this corporate maneuvering will not lead to lower electricity costs or prevent power outages. Instead, ordinary citizens will continue to bear the brunt of high electricity bills. Brosas further criticizes the deal, stating that it essentially involves raiding government-owned and controlled corporations (GOCCs) to fund the controversial Maharlika Investment Fund (MiF), which is then used in questionable deals that primarily benefit big businesses. The acquisition of a 20 percent stake in NGCP by the State coincides with the House of Representatives' investigation into the performance of the power grid operator. House members have raised concerns about NGCP's monopolistic position and its inability to fulfill its mandate under its existing franchise. Brosas questions the effectiveness of having two board seats in addressing the widespread issues of rotating brownouts, high electricity rates, and unstable power supply faced by Filipino families. She emphasizes that this deal appears to be more about controlling profitable assets than improving services. Brosas also highlights concerns regarding transparency and public interest, calling for full disclosure of the transaction's details and demanding accountability from the government. She urges the House of Representatives to exercise its oversight functions and thoroughly scrutinize this deal in the interest of the Filipino people

Notable absences at the event included President Marcos' sister, Imee Marcos, who claimed not to have received an invitation, as well as Senators Christopher Go and Ronald dela Rosa, known allies of Vice President Sara Duterte, following recent tensions with the President.
