Defining the News

This frame grab from a handout video footage taken and released on April 30, 2024 by the Philippine Coast Guard shows the BRP Bagacay being hit by water cannon from Chinese Coast Guard vessels near the Chinese-controlled Scarborough shoal in disputed waters of the South China Sea. The Philippines said the China Coast Guard fired water cannon on April 30 at two of its vessels, causing damage to one of them, during a patrol near a reef off the Southeast Asian country.

“We express serious concern about the increasing use of dangerous maneuvers and water cannons against Philippine vessels,” it said, referring to several water cannon attacks against Philippine sea vessels bringing supplies to Ayungin Shoal. “We re-emphasize the universal and unified character of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and reaffirm UNCLOS’s important role in setting out the legal framework that governs all activities in the oceans and the seas,” the statement read.
