Sixties psych-rock revivalists Eazyhead ups the ante colouring their influences with ethereal shoegaze in some parts and post-punk drone in others, and oh, there’s the obligatory slow rocker trumping everything that passes for ballads in these musically bland times. When the Pinoy band rocks , they’re noisy and raucous as hell. When they turn down the volume, their melodies wrap you up in a heavenly haze.
The album title refers to a nightmarish situation like a bizarre bureaucracy where an individual is stuck in. Red tape is mentioned in the conversation in the opening track “Totally Kafkaesque” which by the second cut onwards fuels hardcore punk band Clean Slate’s apparent refusal to submit to given roles and would rather change or unlearn things. Each track gets delivered in fast to faster hardcore punk tempo abetted by riffs that turn metallic at every opportunity.
Korean all-female trio Rumkicks bill themselves as a punk band and this overview of the band’s discography is a throwback to the more melodic side of the late ‘70s punk explosion via The Ramones, The Damned, and The Dead Boys. Shouts of Oi! Oi! Oi! are occasionally heard but they only add to a happy remembrance of punk rock’s turbulent first five years. The only deviation is that some of the tracks are sung in the girls’ native tongue.
The Ezra Collective won UK’s Mercury Prize in 2023 to become the first jazz act to do so in 31 years. That unique triumph would set the tone for their new album “Dance, No One’s Watching” which band leader Femi Koleoso said was fuelled by “the crazy feeling of making people dance.” In that spirit, the record’s 19 tracks are mostly hot beat-driven dancefloor instrumentals peppered with delirious trumpets and frenzied percussion.
