Andrew Forrest said he would tell Chinese officials in an upcoming meeting to stop squabbling over AUKUS as it was"inconsequential" and a distraction from the"urgent and massive" effort needed to address climate change.Fortescue Metals boss Andrew Forrest said he would tell China's Premier Li Qiang"every country has the right to defend itself" if asked about AUKUS in a meeting between the two men this week.
His comments come after the newly appointed Premier, and long-time ally of President Xi Jinping, issued a veiled threat against the landmark agreement saying"encirclement and suppression are in no one's interest." Trade Minister Don Farrell is also expected to visit the country in the coming weeks in a further push to improve the relationship after it bottomed out toward the end of the Morrison government's term.
However, Australia's commitment to AUKUS has prompted a massive backlash from Chinese officials who have accused all three parties involved of breaching nuclear proliferation agreements and harming peace and stability in the region. Foreign Minister Penny Wong pushed back against Chinese claims that AUKUS violated international nuclear non-proliferation agreements.
