While seeking justice for victims of abuse in junior hockey, former NHLer Daniel Carcillo has had \u0022hundreds\u0022 of messages to his Twitter.
Carcillo says stopping the cycle of abuse, however, won’t be easy, as the adults in charge are often products of the same system.
Ex-Sarnia Sting forward Daniel Carcillo, who won two Stanley Cups with the Chicago Blackhawks, was a plaintiff in a class-action lawsuit against the Canadian Hockey League and its member leagues and teams on behalf of players who allegedly suffered abuse in major junior hockey.“You have traumatized individuals that went through this process, who are now coaches, who are now general managers, who all believe that this is a part of hockey.
“I feel sorry for a lot of hockey guys that work in hockey their whole life because that’s all they know and that’s all they identify themselves as, which is sad,” Carcillo explained. “I think those factors are really playing into why this continues. You’re shaped by your environment, and if your environment is bad, you’re going to come out as a bad person. What I can say about the hockey culture is, it’s very cult-like.
“When you know it could affect everything that you worked for, that’s why a lot of guys kind of just grin and bear it. They know it only happens for one year and just try to get through it the best way you can.”The abuses Carcillo says he suffered in his rookie season were the catalyst that led him to becoming the face of this movement, but it didn’t start out as a crusade.
