Independent Kiama MP Gareth Ward, set to face trial later this year charged with five historic sexual assault offences, is predicted to be re-elected.
abc.net.au/news/gareth-ward-close-to-win-kiama-despite-suspension-parliament/102145342ABC election analyst Antony Green is projecting a former New South Wales Liberal MP, who was previously suspended from parliament because he is facing indecent and sexual assault charges, will be re-elected.Mr Ward has pled not-guilty to charges of indecent and sexual assault
Labor's Katelin McInerney was leading the contest earlier in the week, but Mr Ward pulled ahead after pre-poll votes and distribution of preferences tipped in his favour. Mr Ward was charged last year with one count of sexual intercourse without consent, three counts of assault with an act of indecency, and one count of common assault.
In May last year Mr Ward was suspended from the NSW Parliament when he refused to resign over the allegations, however, that suspension ended when the parliament entered caretaker mode last month. "This decision has angered many locals, including Liberals, who would prefer to leave a clear run for Ward as an independent until his legal matter is resolved," said Kiama's Liberal Executive Committee president Mark Croxford in a tweet.

Moira Deeming’s speech to Liberal Party brought ‘the room to tears’Sky News host Peta Credlin has shared the speech Victorian Liberal Party MP Moira Deeming gave to defend herself from possible expulsion which “brought some in the room to tears”. “It’s about as powerful and raw as I’ve seen in politics,” Ms Credlin said. “Pesutto and his office, they went off half-cocked in the demonisation of Moira Deeming. “They didn’t fact check the primary source material in the footnotes, not at all, they condemned Deeming without an actual justice. “If the Liberal Party will no longer welcome conservatives into its ranks, well the conservative side of politics really is in diabolical trouble.”
