ICYMI: The former Health P.E.I. board chair said the government’s decision last fall to offer $8 million in retention bonuses for nurses and paramedics was “divisive” and ran contrary to efforts made by the board to improve the morale of health workers.
The letter exposed a long-simmering tension between P.E.I.’s political leadership and Health P.E.I.’s board.over what they described as political control over Health P.E.I., which has slowed the health authority’s ability to react to staff shortages.
Hiring is currently the responsibility of the Public Service Commission while recruitment is the role of the Department of Health and Wellness. Former Health P.E.I. board chair Derek Key told a P.E.I. standing committee he found a decision by Premier Dennis King and the Department of Health to provide retention bonuses to nurses but not allied health workers to be 'unhelpful.' - Stu Neatby/SaltWire Network
But in practice, the minister of health often steps outside of these boundaries, as voters look to them to make the system work."If I was to give you a list, it would start with confidence. The minister and/or the Premier's Office has to be confident in the people that they appoint to do the jobs. If they're not, then it's not going to change," Key said.
