Mark Giordano, the longtime Flames captain and now skating for the Maple Leafs, just equalled the NHL’s all\u002Dtime record for blocked shots.
“That’s crazy, but that perfectly describes the kind of player Gio is,” said Flames defenceman Noah Hanifin. “You think of Gio, what a great offensive player he’s been his whole career and winning a Norris Trophy, but he also gets to those gritty areas and he plays hard minutes and blocks shots and hits. That’s what makes him a special player, too. He’s just a real competitive guy, an absolute warrior out there. So I’m not surprised.
He will briefly share the league record with Kris Russell, another of his former teammates at the Saddledome.When Russell set the gold standard last season, the Edmonton Oilers gifted him a pair of silver shin-pads. Your move, Maple Leafs. During his 15-season stint in Cowtown, Giordano was credited with dead-ending 1,792 shots before they could reach the goaltender. That is not only a Flames’ franchise record, it’s nearly double the next-highest total.
