Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, who abdicated earlier this year, has canceled all upcoming engagements after suffering neck and hand injuries in a fall. The 84-year-old former monarch was hospitalized on Wednesday following the fall, which resulted in a fractured left hand and vertebrae injury in her neck. She is now recovering at home and expected to wear a stiff neck collar for several months.
COPENHAGEN, Denmark — Denmark 's ex-monarch Queen Margrethe , who abdicated in January, has canceled her upcoming engagements after she suffered neck and hand injuries in a fall earlier this week, the palace said Friday.'On Wednesday evening, Queen Margrethe was admitted to the hospital after a fall, which unfortunately resulted in an injury concerning the vertebrae of the neck as well as a fracture in the left hand,' the palace said in a statement.
Margrethe, who retained her title after passing the throne to her eldest son Frederik, 'is in good spirits and is doing well under the circumstances.'She 'will, however, be in recovery for a longer period of time,' the palace said.Margrethe is hugely popular among Danes for subtly modernizing the Danish monarchy during her half-century on the throne.She had long vowed that she would never abdicate, but major back surgery in 2023 led to a change of heart.
