Global Foodbanking Network's impact on mitigating carbon emissions through food redistribution.
Global Foodbanking Network's (GFN) mission to fight hunger has mitigated almost 2 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. GFN, a nonprofit that works with regional food banks in more than 50 countries, reports that its member organizations provided 1.7 billion meals to over 40 million people in 2023. Much of this food redistribution was recovered from farms or wholesale produce markets.
These numbers reflect a continued high demand for food banks, serving nearly as many people as in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic caused food insecurity to spike. Many of GFN’s member organizations have invested in agricultural recovery to address this need, rescuing food from farmers before it's discarded. Their efforts highlight how food banks can combat both hunger and environmental protection. By intercepting edible food before it ends up in landfills, food banks help reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions caused by food loss and waste. Emily Broad Leib, founding director of the Food Law and Policy Clinic at Harvard Law School, emphasized the ongoing need to scale up food banks and food recovery operations due to unnecessary food waste. The United Nations Environment Programme estimated that 13 percent of food was lost from producers to retailers in 2022, followed by 19 percent wasted by retailers, restaurants, and households
