Labor’s new cultural policy set to be announced next month will be built on five pillars, including “first nations first” and “a place for every story”.
Labor will unveil Australia’s first national cultural policy in a decade in an early major announcement for 2023, with millions in additional funding for the arts likely to follow in the May budget.
“The New Year will bring a new era for Australia’s arts, entertainment and cultural sector,” Mr Burke said, adding a whole-of-government cultural policy wouldThe other three pillars of the policy will be “the centrality of the artist”, focused on supporting and fostering new creators; “strong institutions” looking at the need for sustainable creative institutions; and “reaching the audience”, focused on ensuring Australian stories are told widely.
“You don’t need me to tell you that the arts sector suffered terribly during COVID, and so much of that suffering was the result of deliberate neglect,” Mr Albanese will tell attendees. Mr Burke said arts, entertainment and the cultural sector were not just needed to demonstrate who we are as Australians, but also played a vital role in the economy.
