SYDNEY, N.S. — Cape Breton Regional Municipality Mayor Amanda McDougall was standing in an enclosed platform 100 feet above the ground when she learned ...

Cape Breton Regional Municipality Mayor Amanda McDougall uses a fire hose during Fire Ops 101 in Sydney on Monday. The event hosted by the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 2779 allows people to experience what a day in the life of a firefighter is like. “We took our time going up but got down fast,” laughed McDougall, who was impressed by how quickly firefighters got them to the ground and then raced off to respond. Then there were five stations set up that simulated tasks a firefighter might have to perform on any given day: exposure to live fire with high temperatures in a simulator then extinguishing it; performing a vehicle extrication using the Jaws of Life ; breaching a locked a door with an axe and Halligan bar; performing CPR and using an automated external defibrillator for an exhausting 20 minutes; and soaring high above the Grand Lake Road Volunteer Fire Department in the tower ladder.

“It was a little bit wet today but can you imagine if we’d done this yesterday in that heat with that gear on? This is just training. Imagine in a real situation where you have a working structure fire and maybe you come in and have someone trapped in the house. Or you’re cutting a car and you had it nice and quiet and clean down there. We go to car accidents where there’s fatalities and someone could be deceased in the back seat and we’re trying to rescue somebody in the front seat.

“Your adrenaline is just off the charts and coming out of there I said to one of my colleagues ‘I feel almost dizzy,’ so I can’t imagine in such a controlled environment feeling that way, what must it be like in a situation where there’s human beings involved and it’s a real emergency situation,” she said.

“I think everyone has enjoyed themselves today and I think everyone had a good chance to get to see exactly what it is that we do,” Whalen said.McDougall said she now has a much better understanding of why equipment and training are vital to firefighting.
