CEBU CITY — What was supposed to be a promise of a fresh start turned into a devastating tragedy for two families in Cebu after separate firecracker explosions claimed the lives of a young vlogger and a child during New Year's celebrations. The vlogger was identified as Clifford Amarilla Remis, 23, and a resident of Barangay San Roque, Asturias, who died when a firecracker exploded near his chest and face.
According to witnesses, Remis tried to check a firework that apparently did not ignite during a community display. Believing it to be a dud, he approached the firecracker which then went off.Remis was rushed to Asturias Infirmary Clinic but was declared dead on arrival due to severe injuries caused by the blast.Authorities noted that the fireworks were meant to explode midair but malfunctioned and detonated prematurely, resulting in the tragic accident. In Talisay City, an 8-year-old boy died from injuries sustained in another firecracker explosion. The incident happened in Barangay Candulawan at around 1 a.m., when the boy and his friends, ages 8 to 16, watched a 20-year-old man lit off a banned 'Goodbye Philippines' firecracker. One of the fireworks malfunctioned and failed to ignite properly, prompting the group to take the device home. There, they attempted to dismantle it by pouring out its gunpowder and striking it with a rock. The blast that followed fatally injured the 8-year-old boy, piercing his chest and causing internal damage. His companions suffered injuries ranging from testicular damage to wounds on their knees, eye and body.Emergency responders rushed the victim to Cebu South Medical Center, but the 8-year-old did not survive.Authorities said that sample taken from the firecracker remnants at the scene revealed it was part of 'Goodbye Philippines,' a prohibited firecracker. The Lapu-Lapu City also recorded three firecracker-related injuries during the celebration
