Australia's financial watchdog is suing a group of former and current high-level executives at casino operator The Star over alleged money laundering protocol breaches.
The watchdog's case also includes claims against Kathleen Lahey, Richard Sheppard, Gerard Bradley, Sally Pitkin, Benjamin Heap and Zlatko Todorcevski, who were members of the board between 2017 - 2019.ASIC alleges the board members approved the expansion of Star's relationship with individuals with reported criminal links, rather than addressing money laundering risks.
The watchdog also alleges that the board members, when provided with information about apparent money laundering risks, did not take appropriate action, breaching their obligations. Suncity was Star's largest junket, with turnover from those high-rollers understood to be around $2.1 billion, $4 billion and $5.9 billion for the 2017, 2018 and 2019 financial years respectively.
