The Northern Territory auditor-general finds the parks receive $7–9 million per year in government subsidies to keep them afloat, raising questions about their viability.
Territory Wildlife Park's visitation today is half of what it was nearly two decades ago.abc.net.au/news/nt-territory-wildlife-park-auditor-general-financial-failure/101806770Visitor numbers to Darwin's Territory Wildlife Park and the Alice Springs Desert Park have dropped by almost half since 2004, raising questions about their future viability, according to new government documents.
However, the report also found the parks face potential financial collapse, with current liabilities of $1.6 million exceeding current assets of $1.2 million."Negative working capital indicates that, without support from the Northern Territory government, Territory Wildlife Parks is unlikely to have sufficient available funds to meet its financial obligations as they fall due," Auditor-General Julie Crisp said in her report.
