With his skinny frame, toothy grin and spangled dance costume, Anton looks a little like a young John Travolta. Hoping to get to Ebony and still make it to the competition, he enlists the aid of her brother Adam , who has a car. The two young men chat about education and books and movies while on the road, their conversation edging toward flirtation, until Adam pushes it over with the casual information that his ex-significant-other was a he. The look on Kol’s face in this moment is priceless.
Writer/director Goran Stolevski lets the romantic tension build to a breaking point before infuriatingly shifting the setting ahead by 11 years to Ebony’s wedding day and an awkward reunion of Adam and Kol. Of An Age is a sweet-bitter story that will resonate with anyone who ever pined for love while on the cusp of adulthood. “They don’t know this feeling,” Kol says at one point of his unrequited yearnings. “Only I do. How lucky.”
It’s a poignant moment, the comment perfectly capturing that sense of being alone in one’s heartbreak. And of course it’s not true. We’ve all been of an age where we can know that feeling. How lucky.3.5 stars out of 5
