Filipinos living in Lao PDR, a predominantly Buddhist country, celebrate Christmas with their friends due to the lack of widespread festivities. While international companies decorate for the holiday, it is not a significant event for the Laotian population, with only 2% being Christian. Expats like Reimar Basaen gather with friends to create a small-scale Noche Buena celebration.

Missing the glitzy, noisy, joyous, and months-long Christmas festivities they are used to, Filipinos in Buddhist-dominated Lao PDR rely on friends to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.Reimar Basaen, a 34-year old restaurant manager at Crowne Plaza Vientiane, told GMA News Online that only a handful of establishments decorate for Christmas .“Yung mga international companies lang ang nagdedecorate, though merong ibang local companies but bihira ,” he said.
