On January 29, 2025, coinciding with the first day of Chinese New Year , the Federation of Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FFCCCII), led by President Cecilio Pedro, will present special awards to prominent Filipinos of Chinese heritage. These individuals have achieved exceptional success in their respective fields and serve as inspiration for the Filipino Chinese community.
The awardees include a diverse group of talents: Ricky Lee, a national artist, novelist, journalist, and educator, celebrated for winning the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) Best Screenplay Award for his poignant prison drama, 'Green Bones.' The film's title draws inspiration from a Chinese belief that a green bone in cremated ashes signifies a person's inherent goodness. Lee's late father, Dy Hian Chin, served as the long-time secretary general of the Camarines Norte Filipino Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry.Jose Mari Chan, the multi-awarded 'King of Pinoy Christmas Carols,' is the son of an immigrant entrepreneur from Fujian province, Antonio Chan. Beyond his timeless carols, Chan is a progressive businessman and actively supports FFCCCII's diverse socio-civic charities. His recent viral December 2024 video highlighting these efforts, including public school donations, free medical missions, calamity relief donations, and other Filipino Chinese community charities, resonated deeply with the public. Jessica Soho, an award-winning journalist, recently explored her Guangdong roots in a heartfelt GMA 7 TV documentary. Soho is one of the Philippines' most accomplished broadcast journalists, renowned for her exceptional integrity, resourcefulness, and talent. Michelle Dee, a beauty and brains actress, host, and model, is also recognized for her civic causes, particularly her support for autism awareness. Dee carries on her family's philanthropic tradition, following in the footsteps of her late grandfather, banker and civic leader Dee K. Chiong, and her great-great-granduncle, a 19th-century lumber tycoon and philanthropist, Dy Han Kia. The list of honorees includes Dennis Trillo, with his real name Dennis Ho, a three-time MMFF Best Actor winner, including the 2024 MMFF Best Actor Award for his unforgettable performance in 'Green Bones.' He is considered one of the country's finest actors. Chris Tiu, an outstanding athlete, TV host, and businessman, serves as an inspiring positive role model for the youth. His immigrant great-grandfather was a Confucian intellectual who once served as principal of the Philippines' oldest Chinese school, Tiongse Academy (known in the pre-war era as Anglo-Chinese School). Finally, Kenneth Cobonpue, Cebu's world-renowned designer, has been creating furniture showcased globally, bringing honor to the Philippines
