JOHN'S, N.L. — The FFAW-Unifor is calling on the Department of Fisheries and Oceans to prioritize the province's northern cod fishery.

“Our union requested a modest increase to this year’s quota that would be in line with the increasing stock, however, the minister at the time instead proceeded with a quota rollover,” said Spingle. The quota rollover, announced in June, noted that the catch for cod should not exceed 12,999 tonnes, including 2,600 tonnes set aside for harvesters fishing off Labrador.

The union also noted that the DFO has also failed to complete the important scheduled surveys and has cancelled the stock assessments in recent years due to a lack of prioritization.
