An estimated 3,350 individuals are left, a number that represents a 36-per-cent population drop over a 30-year period, mostly attributed to predation by cats and rats. Christmas Island, an Australian territory that is about 1,550 kilometres off the coast of Exmouth in Western Australia, is home to the main population of the Indian Ocean red-tailed tropicbird.The bird is also found at the Cocos Islands, Ashmore Reef and Rowley Shoals.
