Australia’s COVID-19 restrictions for incoming travellers from China are not discriminatory, Chinese Australian Forum president Simon Chan says.

“While the medical experts are saying that it is not necessary, there is insufficient information from China to know exactly what is happening. And, obviously, the worry is that there is a new variant. And sometimes hindsight is always better,” he told ABC RN Breakfast. The federal government went against the advice of Chief Medical Office Paul Kelly, who found restrictions on Chinese travellers were unnecessary and disproportionate because the BA.7 omicron sub-variant was already in Australia, and the country’s higher vaccination levels of immunity from previous COVID-19 waves provided additional protection.

Mr Chan said the restrictions might make Chinese tourists feel safer coming to Australia because they are not hopping on the plane with people who are COVID-19 positive.
