The Federal Court has ordered the casino giant to file a brief defence by the end of the month after a 15-month delay.

The Federal Court has put a rocket under the financial crime regulator’s prosecution of Crown Resorts for money laundering, the casino giant to file a brief defence by the end of the month after a 15-month delay.

Crown Casino in Barangaroo, Sydney...Justice Lee asked “I just want to know whether the regulator in this case is serious about running the case or not?”During the hearing on Monday, Justice Lee asked if AUSTRAC was serious about prosecuting Crown, noting that the negotiated settlement to end the Napoleonic wars took less time.

He ordered Crown to file a brief response to AUSTRAC’s allegations by February 27, ahead of the casino operator sitting down with AUSTRAC and a senior registrar to hammer out an agreed statement of facts by April 17.He expects the parties will be able to agree or narrow the relevant facts, and determine which facts are to be contested, to conduct of the trial. The next case management hearing is April 28.

AUSTRAC alleged Crown failed to assess the risk of 60 “high-risk” VIPs who had bet “in excess of $70 billion” and lost $1.1 billion since March 2016. “As some of these 60 customers were customers of both Crown Melbourne and Crown Perth, they account for 83 contraventions in total,” the regulator said in a statement last year.
