A farmers' group has criticized the implementation of Executive Order 62 , which reduced the import tax on rice to 15 percent, saying it has not benefited local farmers and consumers as intended. AGAP party-list Rep. Nicanor Briones claims that despite the lowered import tax, rice prices have not significantly decreased. The government has also faced revenue loss es of approximately P12 billion that could have been used to support farmers and fisherfolk.
Briones proposes revoking the tax reduction and returning it to 35 percent. He also calls for an investigation into potential cartel activity and profiteering by top rice importers. This comes as law enforcement agencies investigate the recent smuggling of 21 containers of frozen mackerel worth P178.5 million
