PETALING JAYA: Fareez Anuar raised Malaysia’s hopes of a golden outing at the 2024 Paris Paralympics after setting up an all-Malaysia final at the Brazil Para International in Sao Paolo on Saturday.
Fariz defeated Tokyo Paralympics semi-finalist Fang Jen-yu of Taiwan 11-21, 21-16, 21-13 to set-up the title match against compatriot Cheah Liek Hou.
The 35-year-old Liek Hou overcame another Taiwan player Gui Yu-pu 21-16, 21-15 in the other semi-final clash. Liek Hou had spoken on the need to have a strong back-up to ensure the men’s singles SU5 gold he won in Japan in 2021 doesn’t slip away and this was probably what pushed Fareez to come this far.
Indonesia are Malaysia’s biggest threats in the Paralympics where Dheva Anrimusthi and Suryo Nugroho, silver and bronze medallists respectively in Tokyo, are expected to mount a strong challenge to unseat Liek Hou in Paris.“Liek Hou is quite established at the top and his focus is on the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou and defending the Paralympics gold,” said Nova.
