For the past decade, the Palola family has called a cemetery in Calasiao, Pangasinan, their home.They started as caretakers in 2014 and have stayed there since, building a life among the tombs.Erlinda Palola, 54, even runs a small store inside the cemetery."Madali ang pera rito, at dito rin po nagta-trabaho ‘yung asawa ko," she said.When there are funerals, her store earns up to P500 a day. On quiet days, they collect plastic bottles to sell.
At night, they lay down cardboard or mats on the mausoleum floor.Over time, they’ve grown accustomed to the surroundings.When asked if they feel the presence of the paranormal, Rosemarie, Erlinda's 21-year-old daughter, replied confidently, "Wala po."Erlinda’s husband, Rodrigo, 72, works as a gravedigger.Despite the challenges of living in a cemetery, he expressed no fear of the dead."Ang kinatatakutan namin ‘yung taong buhay," he said.
