OPINION: Peter Dutton will take a win in Fadden to try to persuade the public and his colleagues that the Liberals are on the right track under his leadership after all.

In a politically bleak winter, Peter Dutton has grabbed the Coalition win in the Fadden byelection with both hands.in the Queensland seat is relatively modest at between 2 and 3 per cent. That’s still enough for the Opposition Leader to claim vindication for his argument that the country is going in the wrong direction under Anthony Albanese.

The Albanese government certainly never expected to win the north Gold Coast seat but had savoured the prospect of perhaps a modest swing against the LNP rather than against Labor. In that sense, Dutton had more to lose than Albanese in a state where Labor holds only five of 30 federal seats.A win is a win – backed by a generous helping of $600,000 worth of campaign funds to ensure it.

The opposition is clearly still struggling for relevance and recognition in its desperate pursuit of Labor’s lead, relying on the steadily accumulating economic pain as its key weapon.
