A cyber security expert from the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) demonstrated a tool capable of detecting deepfake videos during a congressional hearing on fake news and misinformation. The hearing, led by the Tricom, focused on the need for legislation to address the growing problem of online disinformation. Meanwhile, lawmakers issued show cause orders to several social media personalities who skipped the hearing, citing their right to free expression.
THE national government is not totally helpless in going after masterminds of fake news and disinformation, an expert from the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center said, as he showed lawmakers a “tool” that can easily detect deepfake videos.
Information and Communications Technology Secretary Ivan Uy, on the other hand, clarified to lawmakers that the department is still in the process of acquiring licensed software for the app. “Right now, it’s not a freeware. Maybe we can make it more affordable. We were just the ones who were first to purchase.”
Manila Rep. Bienvenido “Benny” Abante moved for the issuance of the order, saying, “I dare to make a motion, Mr. Chair, that we issue a show cause order on this Elizabeth Cruz.” The motion was swiftly approved. “Is she a lawyer?” he asked before moving for a show cause order against her. “Mr. Chairman, I have two motions. My motion is to issue a show cause order to Atty. Trixie Angeles.” The motion was seconded and approved.
