Skills shortage ‘crisis’ remains despite ‘decades of concern’The Australian Population Research Institute's Bob Birrell says that despite “decades of concern” over skills shortages, Australia is still grappling with a 'serious crisis' in 2022. “Successive governments, the Coalition and now Labor are not changing the situation at all,” Mr Birrell told Sky News host Cory Bernardi. “A massive amount of teaching resources … is allocated to overseas students, 40 per cent of graduates. “The universities, they can charge what the market will bear, and they can do what they please with the funds … rather than prioritizing skills which are short supply in Australia. “Australian governments, and now the Australian Labor government has decided that it’s going to continue to allow this practice.”
