EARLIER this month, I had the opportunity to give a brief discussion on the importance of living a zero-waste lifestyle during a Zero Waste Training and Workshop with a national government agency. Many people are unaware that living a zero-waste lifestyle contributes to environmental sustainability, resource conservation and pollution reduction.
It is crucial for all of us to understand that adopting zero-waste practices means reducing the amount of waste we send to landfills, incinerators and oceans. In doing so, we not only address our global ranking as the third-biggest marine polluter, but we also decrease environmental pollution and greenhouse gas emissions associated with waste disposal. This, in turn, helps mitigate climate change and protects ecosystems and biodiversity.
This legislation requires waste segregation at the source, with households, businesses and institutions separating recyclable, biodegradable and residual waste streams. It also includes capacity-building and training programs to develop technical skills and knowledge in sustainable waste management practices.The law's goal is to promote sustainable waste management practices, reduce environmental impact and advance socioeconomic development in line with the Sustainable Development Goals .
