THE global market for electric vehicles has been growing by leaps and bounds as a manifestation of our collective effort to transition toward a low-carbon way of life. However, while electric vehicles may not produce 'tailpipe emissions,' the batteries aren't 'green' enough. The battery is the most expensive part of an electric vehicle. It contains precious minerals — lithium, cobalt, manganese and nickel — that have to be mined and processed.
The third level in the Zero Waste hierarchy is repair, reuse and refurbish, followed by 'appropriate' or 'safe and effective' recycling. Repairing, reusing and refurbishing seem problematic due to high cost, lack of standards and tools, and difficulties in assessing the batteries' 'state of health,' among other factors.
