The president of the European Commission arrived in the country on Sunday for the first official visit by a top leader of the commission in nearly 60 years of relations with the Philippines.
von der Leyen's visit last week, saying she would be in the country until August 1. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. invited von der Leyen to visit the country during their meeting in Brussels at the ASEAN-EU Commemorative Summit in December last year.
"The visit aims to give a new impetus to the EU-Philippines bilateral relations and engage in discussions on matters of mutual interest, in particular in the ears of trade, the green and digital transition and security," the EU said in a July 27 statement. Von der Leyen will meet with Marcos, and is expected to speak at events organized by the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines in partnership with the Makati Business Club.
