CUSTOMS Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno on Wednesday warned about a deceptive scheme called “enrollment,” in which brokers and importers pay for arranged fees to avail of faster processing of shipments.
“The Bureau of Customs , under my leadership, will never tolerate or condone any form of extortion, bribery or solicitation in exchange for special favors,” Nepomuceno said in a statement.“Any attempt to exploit the BOC’s name or my position for personal gain is a direct assault on the integrity of our institution, and it will be met with swift and uncompromising action. I will not allow these schemes to take root or persist under my leadership,” he added.
The so-called enrollment scheme is not a BOC program, Nepomuceno pointed out, saying that importers, brokers and stakeholders who fall for such fraudulent deals do so at their own risk and may face criminal prosecution under existing laws.“In response to these reports, the BOC has initiated an investigation to identify and hold accountable those behind the scheme,” Nepomuceno said.
