Around one to eight million Filipinos could have been infected with the new coronavirus disease had the government not promptly imposed enhanced community quarantine in Luzon, a Palace official said Tuesday.

Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles said the quarantine measure has helped save lives and prevent such “worst case scenarios” presented by scientists and other experts to the government.

Another expert estimated the country’s cases might peak at 1.9 million “kung papabayaan lang natin ito at wala tayong gagawin ,” Nograles said. “Kaya nabanggit ni Secretary Dominguez na kung hindi agad tayo nag-lockdown, we would have potentially lost 100,000 Filipino lives. Kasi siyempre kapag ito po iyong peak, 1.9, 5.2, 6.2, 8.3 million Filipinos, i-multiply mo doon, ano iyong mortality rate ng COVID-19. I-check mo anong mortality o fatality rate ng COVID-19 across the world, doon mo ma-estimate how many potential lives of Filipinos are lost ,” he said.

“We all want life to go back to normal. We want to see our friends, relatives, our loved ones in various places in the Philippines. These, however, will only be possible if we remain vigilant and continue to take the necessary precautions to prevent the virus from spreading,” he said.
