IT is heartwarming to see that Metrobank founder George S. K. Ty’s vision of funding social enterprises to enhance their impact and offering scholarships to underprivileged students, which ultimately transforms their families’ lives, is still going strong and is now in its 41st year.
The Metrobank Foundation, established by Ty 16 years after founding the bank, has transformed into a funding powerhouse with a focus on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and nation building. Last Wednesday, the foundation allocated P45 million to social enterprises, specifically targeting livelihood initiatives for this year.
One grantee of Metrobank Foundation is East-West Seed Foundation, which was able to pursue programs that put food on the table for impoverished students. Its flagship program, VeggiEskwela provided year-round vegetable production training to over 27,000 students, 4,000 teachers and 3,000 barangays and schools since 2012.
In Bohol, Metrobank Foundation is helping the Good Neighbors International Philippines, which allow livelihood access for marginalized and unemployed women in that province. Good Neighbors is a Korean-founded humanitarian aid and development non-government organization. What it does is to kickstart business ventures of the marginalized women, which includes setting up their sari sari stores and selling rice and feeds.
In the area of health, the two foundations partnered with various organizations on programs related to nutrition, water source rehabilitation, vegetable exchange in rural areas, supporting in-patient services and in-house surgical procedures for indigent patients, and providing free eye checkups and prescription glasses to public elementary students, among others.
