Billionaire Elon Musk has imposed a funding disclosure on the Australian Broadcast Corporation’s official Twitter account as he tries to wipe out “false claims” of no bias by public media outlets.
The platform’s owner, billionaire Elon Musk, has begun imposing the disclosures on public media organisations to provide “additional context” for “government accounts”.
Twitter’s decision follows backlash from public media outlets in both the United States and United Kingdom. "We are aiming for maximum transparency and accuracy. Linking to ownership and source of funds probably makes sense,” he said. But Musk backflipped during a trainwreck interview with the British broadcaster revealing he would make the change to represent the BBC’s own self-designation as “publicly funded”.
The US public radio network, NPR, reacted fiercely to its new designation with Twitter going one step further to label the outlet “US state-affiliated media” before Musk again backtracked and reverted to “government-funded media”.

The Melbourne man has been running the theatre company Spiegelworld in Las Vegas since his move to the United States in the early 2000s. “It’s a really fascinating place,” Mr Minear told Sky News Australia. “I feel like it’s a bit hard for us in Australia to get our heads around – you know, we’re used to small towns in regional areas being run by local councils and things like that. “Whereas in the US, this is a little bit more common – people can take ownership of a town.”
