The NSW energy ombudsman received over 5000 complaints about power bills this winter, as cost of living pressures bite.

A record number of people complained to the state’s ombudsman about their power bill this winter, forcing it to hire additional dispute resolution staff to manage the workload.

“But now what we are seeing is that just that first bill, or even the media or retailer advice that their bill is going to be higher, is pushing people over. Some of these people have never had to ask for help before.” “The last thing you want is a backlog of complaints at an ombudsman’s office,” Young said, justifying the expense.Complaints about price increases across electricity, water and gas were 21.9 per cent higher than when power companies applied their annual July price increase last year. Complaints centred on having difficulty paying a bill were up 31.1 per cent from the previous year.

Roughly 21,000 customers received a crisis support $50 Energy Accounts Payment Assistance voucher between July and September this year, up from 19,700 during the same period in 2022.
