Police are working to formally identify the body of a man found at a popular beach south of Sydney five days after the disappearance of an international student.

Life savers carried out an extensive search of the beach and nearby waters at the time but crews were unable to find the missing swimmer. Surf life-savers faced challenging conditions during their search on Tuesday with the swell doubling in size for several hours.Local media has reported the missing swimmer is believed to be a 28-year-old international student from the University of Wollongong.
