The upsurge in cases of impostor accounts on Facebook appeared to be targeting even officials of the government.
On Sunday, June 14, Police Lt. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar warned the public against impostor accounts using his name and photos following the discovery of existing fake accounts which were made by, what he describes as, cybercriminals.
Eleazar made the warning in order to inform Facebook users of some of the modus operandi of cybercriminals who were using impostor accounts to ask money from relatives and friends of the real account users. Government law enforcement agencies have already launched their respective investigations on the incident.
“We have to be alert and take the initiative of protecting ourselves online because our names could be used for illegal activities,” he said.
