A handful of locals descended upon the Ashfield Civic Centre armed with signs reading "fix this mess" and a wheelie bin packed with rubbish, to voice their concerns over the FOGO bin rollout.
council's decision to overhaul bin night collection has sparked confusion among elderly and non-English speaking residents, who claim the new system has not been properly communicated to them.across suburbs including Balmain, Ashfield, Annandale, Leichhardt and Marrickville.
Households are required to discard food scraps into their green bins, which will now be collected weekly. Lahood said while a calendar is available on the IWC website, it was inaccessible for some elderly residents who aren't technologically savvy. He blamed the "rushed" rollout of the service, claiming council did not allow enough time to properly educate residents on the system.
"I have recently had an extra meeting with council staff to seek greater oversight over the rollout and ask about the issues the community is reporting. " "It is very important that the council is transparent about the FOGO rollout, to reflect on its own performance but also to ensure other councils can learn from the rollout."
Inner West Council General Manager Peter Gainsford said council put "several supports in place prior to the rollout to help our residents during the transition".
