Dutch athlete Menno Vloon also cleared 5.70 meters, but he took three attempts to surpass 5.60 meters, relegating him to the silver medal.
Obiena's victory marked a significant milestone as he showcased his resilience after a spine injury cut his 2024 season short. He had made a comeback in January with his first competition in five months, participating in a meet in Germany. The Filipino athlete continued his impressive performance, clearing both 5.50m and 5.70m on his first attempts before three fouls at 5.85m. With the gold already secured, he opted to rest on his final attempt. Obiena's next challenge awaits him in Germany, where he will compete in the ISTAF Indoor on Sunday, February 9, aiming to defend his title.
