TODAY'S EDITORIAL: Efforts to end Ukraine war lurching forward
FINALLY, there is cautious optimism that efforts to end the war in Ukraine are gaining traction.Vladimir Putin has confirmed that he has ordered Russian troops in Ukraine to pull back from frontline positions. Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is toning down his aspirations for his country to join the NATO fold.Russian and Ukrainian negotiators meeting in Turkey have agreed to narrow down discussions to a set of talking points, including giving Ukraine neutrality status.
Zelenskyy, too, must feel it is time to tamp down his reliance on NATO to come to his country's rescue. The no-fly zone he so desperately sought was a pipe dream; NATO will never risk going to war over a country that is not a member of the security alliance.Zelenskyy must now realize that for Ukraine to emerge from the horror it is experiencing, he must learn to compromise. He says he is willing to meet with Putin to secure peace 'without delay.
