The NCC will go ahead with plans to remove asbestos and outdated mechanical parts of the house. There are ominous reports the wiring is substandard and there are hefty pest control bills. We have a better plan: Tear it down and start over. A retrofit would simply send good money after bad. The residence is in no way historic and prime ministers have complained about its state of disrepair for decades. Even with no one living in it, the cost of upkeep for the house is prohibitive.Article contentuncovered the shocking bills for upkeep. Total expenses from November 2015 through March 2016 were an eye-watering $171,376. That’s just for the property and doesn’t include food or staffing.

It’s entirely appropriate that a country like Canada, where the PM could live hundreds of miles from Parliament, would provide an official residence as a place to live, work and entertain visiting dignitaries.
