Falsehoods, lies, misinformation take a toll on our civic debate, our ability to make informed decisions, erode trust in institutions, exacerbate social divides and even put our health at risk.Between March and November 2021, misinformation fuelled vaccine hesitancy among an estimated 2.4 million Canadians.

Of course Canadians asked — and continue to ask — legitimate questions to assure themselves of the effectiveness and safety of everything from vaccines to public health restrictions. On such public policy issues, there is a place, an imperative even, for such debates, informed by latest science. Society today is especially vulnerable, due in part to social media, which facilitates the rapid, unchecked, transmission of half-truths and falsehoods and fear-mongering, states Alex Himelfarb, the former top civil servant who chaired the panel of 13 experts who did the study, which was funded by the federal government.
